Music, one of the things that makes us unique as human beings, since humans have lived on this planet we have had some form of music to express out individuality, and give us a universal voice that everyone can understand. Throughout the years music has changed into more and more genres, each with there own unique sound and story. One of my favorite instruments that makes some of the most beautiful sounds is the piano. This instrument has the ability to invoke so much emotion into you simply by shifting the tone of the key. To show some examples of that, I have 5 songs that show the range of a piano. The first one I am going to talk about is a song called NY State of Mind by rapper, Nas. In this song as soon as hear the piano drop, it gives a very menacing sound, which in turn gives you a feeling of unease, or that you are not safe. That’s because he is trying to portray a dark image of where he grew up in New York City, and as he starts rapping, the piano continues with its low keys and then surprises you with a high key which is supposed to convey that same shock that you would feel if you went through his neighborhood. Overall, he captures that emotion in his song perfectly. Next is a rock song by Journey called don’t stop believing. This song to me gives of a sense of motivation, I can guarantee you the start of that song could make anybody turn form having a sad day to a happy one because it is simply amazing. And the keys that they are playing with the piano goes perfectly with the theme of the song because it is bold and in you face but at the same time inspiring. For this third one we will now dive into some classical music by an artist named Hanz Zimmer, his song is time. When he starts, he uses low keys to portray a sense of sadness or loss and then he brings the keys up a little bit and overall, when I hear this song it feels like he tryna make you feel like time is standing still jus like in inception, the movie when time stood still for them. The fourth, and one of my personal favorite songs is Falling by the talented alicia keys. In this song she actually starts it off with her strong vocals and then a couple seconds later, let’s the piano drop. This to me is very significant because she really wants the listener to feel what she’s is saying in the beginning and then make the piano intensify those emotions. Throughout the song, the combination of her voice and the piano gives a very unforgettable and powerful sound. The last song that I’m going to over is hello, by Adelle. This song starts off with a slow tempo from the piano but by the end of the song has a stark difference in tone.
